Washington Business Insurance

Customized protection for your Washington business

As a small business owner in Washington state, you should consider several types of commercial insurance to protect from a variety of work-related incidents, including customer injury and business property damage. A single accident can result in lawsuits and financial hardships that might be difficult to overcome without it.

There are over 644,000 small businesses in Washington that collectively employ over 49% of the state’s workforce, according to the Small Business Administration (SBA). Businesses that have employees are required by Washington state law to carry workers’ compensation coverage.

The Progressive Advantage® Business Program can help you personalize a Washington business insurance policy with the adequate coverage you need to protect your livelihood.

Types of WA business insurance

General Liability

This is the most common business insurance coverage, and nearly all businesses in Washington should have it. It protects against third-party bodily injury and property damage, as well as personal and advertising injury.

Commercial Auto

This coverage protects against damage to your vehicles and trailers, as well as injuries or property damage related to their use. Your personal auto policy doesn’t cover vehicles while they’re being used for business reasons.

Workers' Compensation

Washington state law requires businesses with employees to carry workers' comp. Employers must go through the state to get coverage.

Business Owners Policy (BOP)

A BOP combines property and liability coverage into one easy-to-manage policy. It’s a great option for small to medium-sized businesses that rent or own commercial property, such as a storefront, warehouse or office building.

Professional Liability

Washington businesses that offer professional services should consider this coverage. It protects businesses from claims of professional negligence, both actual or alleged, and helps pay for defense costs. It’s also known as errors and omissions insurance (E&O).

Cyber Insurance

This protects against incidents like data breaches and cyber attacks. It includes first-party and third-party protection for things like investigative services, data recovery and legal costs. Businesses that store or manage customer data, like credit card information, typically need this coverage.

How much does business insurance cost in Washington?

The cost of a Washington business insurance policy mostly depends on the type of work that’s done. Professions are usually rated on the exposures that are unique to their industry. For example, a general contractor is considered high-risk because they oversee large projects that involve heavy tools and equipment and subcontract much of their work.

Other factors that affect cost include a business’s coverage needs, size and location. For example, a business located on the coast near Seattle can expect a different rate than a business located inland near Spokane.

Washington business insurance requirements

Washington state law requires all businesses with employees to carry workers’ compensation insurance, though some exemptions do exist. Business owners can get coverage through the state insurance fund or qualify to become self-insured. Unlike most other states, Washington businesses are unable to get coverage through private insurers.

While Washington state doesn’t require you to have other types of business insurance, like general liability or professional liability, many prospective clients do. They often include specific coverage requirements in their contracts and won’t begin working with you until those requirements are met.
